ABSTRACT

Led by Action for a Better Community, Inc., which is the local Head Start grantee and federally designated Community Action Agency, ROC-HPOG joins together the area’s largest employer and educational institutions, adult learning and training centers, local TANF agency, and a diverse set of community-based organizations in a collaborative effort to engage 1,500 participants in the educational and training pathways that will lead them to sustainable, high-demand healthcare careers. The program offers four specific career lattices: Nursing and Clinical, Health IT, Health Tech, and Health Administration. Occupations trained for include: Nursing Assistant, Registered Nurse, Pharmacy Technician, Medical and Health Service Manager, Receptionist and Information Clerk, Pharmacy Aide, Home Health Aide, Emergency Medical Technician, Community Health Worker, Radiologic Technologist, Surgical Technician, Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurse, Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant, Medical and Clinical Lab, Dental Hygienist, Paramedic, Medical Records and Health Information Technician, Dental Hygienist and Assistant, Medical Interpreter, Sterile Processing Technician, EKG Technician, Personal Care Aide, Substance Abuse and Behavioral Disorder Counselor, Physical Therapist, and Direct Support Professionals.

ROC-HPOG can assist participants with rent assistance if the participant is in danger of losing current housing, childcare payments, minor automobile repairs, transportation in the form of bus passes, the purchase of class books or other school supplies, the purchase of uniforms for employment, application fees for training, tuition assistance and state testing fees. An employer’s partner group was established to promote successful employment opportunities upon training completion. Partners include Rochester Regional Health, Episcopal Senior Life, St. John’s Home, Jewish Senior Life, Lifetime Assistance, and Strong Staffing. The Monroe County Department of Health and Human Services is a referral source, and Rochester Works! continues to be involved in the program by providing tuition-funded assistance to qualified healthcare programs.
