The Health CareeRx Academy program at The Workplace provides healthcare training for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and other low-income individuals. Their goal is to serve Fairfield county and a portion of New Haven county, Connecticut, working to help participants find healthcare careers.

The Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County’s Healthcare Workforce for the Future (HWF) project trains and helps Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and other low-income individuals find careers in healthcare professions. The program also provides participants with case management, academic advising, and support services such as childcare, transportation, and emergency assistance.

Central Community College’s Health Profession Opportunity Grant, the Project Health Education Laddering Program (H.E.L.P) is open to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and other low-income individuals in Nebraska. They provide training opportunities with the ultimate goal of placing participants on a career path for healthcare jobs.

The Health Education Laddering Program (HELP) at Central Community College (CCC) is no stranger to growth. Along with project partners Southeast Community College, Northeast Community College, and Mid-Plains Community College, CCC engages TANF recipients and other low-income individuals in healthcare education and training. The ultimate goal is to place them on a career pathway to healthcare occupations that pay well and are in high demand. Through scaling up their strategies and interventions over time, Project HELP has gone from one college serving a 14,000-square­mile, 25-county service area to four colleges serving a 60,382-square-mile, 77-county service area.

Volunteers of America Texas Health Profession Opportunity Grant (VOATX HPOG) does not just open the door to employment for its participants; it gives them the keys. VOATX HPOG provides opportunities for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and other low-income persons in Houston and Conroe, Texas. It helps them obtain education, vocational training, and living wage employment in high-demand positions in the healthcare industry.

This video highlights participant success stories. It is intended as a tool for grantees to raise awareness and therefore attract and recruit new participants into their programs.

Montefiore Medical Center focuses on promoting healthier neighborhoods through commitment to community and population health. They are helping build healthcare workforce development opportunities for residents of the Bronx, New York and its surrounding communities. Montefiore Health Profession Opportunity Grants (HPOG) provides support to its participants to complete home health aide training, obtain employment, and pursue career advancement. To date, Montefiore HPOG has helped hundreds along career pathways to self-sufficiency.

Whatcom Community College (WCC) added the Innovations in Creating Access to Careers in Healthcare Grant (I-CATCH) program to their campus in October 2018. The I-CATCH program is open to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients and low-income individuals looking for a new career in healthcare. WCC’s addition of I-CATCH opened training and support services to more people in Washington state. It also brought a new approach to I-CATCH participant coaching. The WCC I-CATCH program uses a student-centered coaching approach, which focuses on utilizing campus and community resources to fund and support students’ personal needs. The coaching also keeps employment in mind through every step of the student’s academic progression.

The Health Profession Opportunity Grants (HPOG) program released a paper on how to use labor market data to understand and respond to employer demands.  It contents support multiple elements of the Job-Driven Training Checklist, unveiled by Vice President Biden, including Engaging Employers, Smart Choices, Measurement Matters and Stepping Stones. The paper offers an 8-step approach to utilizing and understanding labor market information.

The 2012 Compendium of Promising Practices captures some of the unique or innovative practices that grantees have identified as strategies that are important to their programs.
