ABSTRACT

Goodwill® Industries of the Valleys, Inc. (Goodwill), on behalf of a multiagency/multijurisdictional collaborative in Virginia, operates the GoodCare Career Pathways Program (GoodCare). GoodCare is a three-part behavioral change model designed to integrate supportive, educational, and workplace services in healthcare training. GoodCare provides supportive services, education, training, and employment for occupations in three healthcare tracks: nursing, health information, and healthcare support. The nursing pathway begins with the Patient Care Assistant position and continues through to Registered Nurse. The health information pathway begins with training as a Medical Office Specialist and progresses through an associate’s degree in health information technology. The healthcare support pathway includes training for the following positions: Phlebotomist, Ophthalmic Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, and Clinical Medical Assistant.

The supportive services offered include training tuition, textbooks, supplies, and credentialing; background checks; health exams and other work/training-related fees; transportation assistance; childcare assistance; emergency assistance; non-emergency food assistance; housing support/assistance; interview and work attire; and incentives. Program partners include DSS agencies, adult education and literacy providers, community colleges, and local employers. Goodwill is the operator for three of the four workforce areas in the HPOG coverage area and has very strong working relationships with those workforce investment boards. For the fourth workforce area, there is a well-developed, cross-referral system in place for other programming and a commitment to continue the cross-referral process for HPOG. The HPOG has discussed with one area workforce board ways to offer apprenticeship opportunities in the Shenandoah Valley Region. The program is also investigating the availability of an apprenticeship in Medical Coding.
