Workshops build skills and knowledge for graduates of the Health CareeRx Academy.

The residents of Connecticut are growing older. Many chose to live their final days in the comfort of their own home. The Health CareeRx Academy at The WorkPlace offers workshops to educate program participants on proper care for aging communities.

End-of-life care can be very intimate and challenging. A study from the AARP Policy Institute, Home Alone: Families Providing Complex Care, found that a large percentage of family caregivers provide complex medical care to family members with very little training or support. The Caregiver School workshop series responds to this training need.

The two day, six-module workshop, is aimed at participants in Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Patient Care Technician (PCT) tracks. CNA and PCT students gain knowledge, skills, emotional and technical support to provide medical care to a person living on their own. They learn about the often unknown aspects of growing old. Topics include care coordination, daily living and dementia behaviors.

The Caregiver School has been a success with participants. The training enhances core caregiving and communication skills when working with patients of any age. The workshop reinforces concepts, materials, and skills covered in CNA and PCT training. This keeps participants engaged and serves as a study tool for students awaiting licensing exams or employment.

With the growth of the elderly population comes a significant increase in demand for skilled workers in the home care industry. The Caregiver School development and training workshops provide CNA and CPT graduates opportunities for employment in home-based care and working with patients with dementia.

Health CareeRx Academy teaches students how to care for those who once cared for us.
