Ensuring basic education training for all students leads to success

The Allied Health Career Pipeline at Hostos Community College recognized they needed to focus on Adult Basic Education (ABE) training to help their participants achieve success. They introduced ABE training in 2018 as a part of their Home Health Aide (HHA) training and later offered it as a prerequisite to Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) students.

The ABE training focused on reading comprehension, writing, and communication skills. All students received an established curriculum of ABE training and instructors were available to tutor students that needed extra support. Participants also received supportive services such as case management, academic advising, and help with training-related costs including transportation and childcare.

Through the ABE training, the program exceeded their Basic Skills Education goals. In Year Four of the program, 46 students enrolled in basic skills and 44 completed the program. Hostos’ HPOG 2.0 goals are to enroll 125 students and have 100 complete Basic Skills education. To date, there are 121 students enrolled in ABE training and 100 students have completed it. Allied Health Career Pipeline continues to provide Basic Skills Education training and plans to exceed their HPOG 2.0 projected goals.
