It’s never too late to take a chance.

Mindie is a 45-year-old single mother and sole provider for her young son and teenage daughter. She got her Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) certification in 2003 but battled financial stability for the last 15 years.

She always wanted to continue her education and become a Registered Nurse (RN), but she had to work overtime and on weekends to support her family. Mindie knew that she needed more training to further her career and achieve financial freedom.

In the Spring of 2017, Mindie happened upon a Facebook post from GoodCare , a healthcare training program provided by HPOG grantee, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys. Though her family has always been there for her, Mindie knew she needed more support to be ready for her RN classes. Her application to the program was accepted in May 2017, and she jumped right in.

During the fall and summer of 2017, Mindie completed the prerequisite courses needed for admission to the RN program at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC). With the support of GoodCare and tutoring from the student achievement center at DSLCC, Mindie earned a 3.5 GPA both semesters. GoodCare assisted with utility payments, textbooks, tuition, scrubs, shoes, nursing equipment, and transportation. She was then accepted into their LPN-to-RN bridge program.

Mindie will complete the RN program in December 2019. At that time, she may be eligible for a promotion at the nursing home where she works, but she also wants to explore other options that could offer higher pay. Mindie knows that GoodCare will help with her employment search, once she finishes her degree.

“GoodCare has opened up opportunities for me, furthered my education, and bolstered my confidence to have the ability to go back and expand my mind. I would not have not gone back to school without GoodCare.”
