Success: Luzerne County Head Start used ARP funds to complete a major repair at their primary Beekman Street location in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, home to their central office and 13 Head Start classrooms. The largest and most significant repair was resurfacing the facility's 38,963 square foot roof, which was no longer under warranty and causing costly repairs annually. It helped repair the entire roof and grant the program a new warranty for future repairs. The program was also able to replace 66 residential windows, most of which were non-operational and could not open, close, or lock correctly. With functional windows, the recipient can now properly secure the building and open windows to allow fresh air to circulate into classrooms and hallways. Funds also helped redesign Beekman Street’s existing play space into a natural outdoor classroom space with paved areas and varied spaces within the play yard to support different types of activities.
