National Preparedness Month — September 2024

The United States observes National Preparedness Month each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. 

In 2024, ACF adopted the Ready Campaign's 2024 National Preparedness Theme: “Start a Conversation” . OHSEPR posted resources on its National Preparedness Month 2024 web page allowing organizations to start conversations that would help them prepare for many kinds of emergencies. The web page also provided a list of emergency and disaster preparedness resources available through ACF program offices.

Forward Together: Shaping the Future of Disaster Human Services — August 2024

OHSEPR held a 2-and-a-half-day event designed for participates to exchange knowledge and use their experiences as a springboard for dynamic, collaborative, and consequential engagement at the intersection of human services and crisis management. It galvanized community building and networking, fostered dialogue on emerging issues, and allowed attendees to share promising practices and activities across government and non-government sectors in disaster and crisis response.

Learn what leaders, experts, practitioners, and others shared from their disaster experiences and how the information will be used to improve the future of our rapidly evolving field. 

ACF Post-Disaster Housing Assistance Webinar  September 2023

In observance of National Preparedness Month, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) held a panel discussion on post-disaster housing assistance for disaster survivors that may be available through four ACF programs. These programs include Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Community Services Block Grant, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, and the Social Services Block Grant.

Strengthening Partnerships for Healthy, Climate Resilient, and Thriving Communities August 2023

The convening focused on raising awareness across health and human services sectors of the nexus between environmental justice, climate change, and climate disaster; developing cross-industry connections to facilitate the transfer of valuable knowledge, ideas, and solutions-based resources; and leveraging existing programs and resources to address these concerns. It served as a space to share and discuss key learnings from those engagements, and identify interdisciplinary partnership opportunities to engage and address the resonant themes from those discussions.

Disaster Human Services Webinars: Integrating Equity and Human Services Principles in Emergency Response — September 2022

OHSEPR launched a series of regional deliveries of the OHSEPR Disaster Human Services: Integrating Equity and Human Services Principles in Emergency Response seminar in concert with ACF’s observance of National Preparedness Month as part of our efforts to advance a culture and support a community of preparedness. The intent of these seminars was to advance equitable disaster operations by equipping human services providers and emergency responders with the principles of disaster equity and disaster human services and providing examples of their application in disaster case management operations.

From Hurricane Katrina to Paradise Wildfires, Exploring Themes in Disaster Human Services — January 2021

On behalf of the Office of Human Services Emergency Preparedness and Response (OHSEPR), the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a workshop called “From Hurricane Katrina to Paradise Wildfires, Exploring Themes in Disaster Human Services.” The online event focused on children and youth in disasters.
