Support for Analytic Capacity of National Survey of Early Care and Education Public-use and Restricted-use Data, 2020 - 2025 - Overview

This project serves to help the National Survey of Early Care and Education (NSECE) data achieve its full potential as an analytic and methodological resource for the Administration for Children and Families and the early care and education (ECE) community broadly.

The NSECE is a nationally representative survey that characterizes the use and availability of ECE in the United States. It consists of four inter-related surveys that collect information about:

  • households with children under the age of 13
  • providers of child care and early education services available to families with children ages birth to 5- years; and
  • workforce caring for young children in center- and home-based settings

Data was collected in 2012, providing the first comprehensive national portrait of the ECE use and availability since the early 1990s. In 2019, the NSECE gathered updated information to better understand how the ECE landscape had changed between 2012 and 2019.

This project will enhance the analytic capacity and support the optimal use of data collected across both rounds. The project will achieve its goals through:

  • provision of restricted-use data access to researchers,
  • enhancements to public-use and restricted-use data files,
  • technical assistance to researchers using the NSECE data,
  • analyses of data on questions of high priority to ACF.

This work is implemented through a contract with NORC at the University of Chicago.
