Addressing Mental Health, Behavioral Health, and Social and Emotional Well-Being in Head Start: Insights from the Head Start Health Manager Descriptive Study

Introduction

This brief focuses on the mental health, behavioral health, and social and emotional well-being issues that Head Start/Early Head Start programs face, as well as staffing, programming, and additional resources used to address these needs. The brief addresses the following research questions:

  1. What mental health, behavioral health, and social and emotional well-being issues do Head Start/Early Head Start programs face?
  2. What are the staffing models used to address this domain of health? How does staff training address mental health, behavioral health, and social and emotional well-being?
  3. What health programming (e.g., services, activities, education) is in place to address mental health, behavioral health, and social and emotional well-being issues?
  4. How are programs leveraging the Health Services Advisory Committee, health care providers, and other community resources to address mental health, behavioral health, and social and emotional well-being?
