Physical and mental wellness, as well as access to healthcare, are foundations for the successful resettlement of refugees and other populations eligible for ORR-funded programs. Without feeling healthy, it is difficult to work, go to school, socialize, or take care of a family. Without access to healthcare, such as having health coverage, an injury or illness can threaten well-being and economic self-sufficiency.
Many factors can affect the health of newcomers prior to resettlement in the U.S. including:
- Geographic origin and, for some, refugee camp or other conditions with crowding and limited resources
- Access to overseas healthcare services
- Exposure to infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis
- Susceptibility to poor nutrition and chronic illnesses, such as diabetes
- Traumas from conflict, displacement, and resettlement, which can cause mental health concerns, such as post-traumatic stress disorder or depression
Many factors can affect these newcomers’ health after arrival in the U.S. including:
- Challenges navigating the U.S. health care system
- Limited English proficiency
- Barriers to finding culturally and linguistically appropriate health education resources and care
- Available social and community support systems
- Cost of health coverage
