National Advisory Committee Publishes Best Practices and Recommendations for States

September 15, 2020

On September 15, 2020, the National Advisory Committee on the Sex Trafficking of Children and Youth in the United States published its interim report, Best Practices and Recommendations for States to prevent and combat the sex trafficking of children and youth.

The Committee, established through the Preventing Sex Trafficking and Strengthening Families Act of 2014, is responsible for two Congressional reports:

  • Two tiers of recommended best practices for states to follow to combat the sex trafficking of children and youth. The Committee released Preliminary Recommendations to Strengthen the Nation’s Response to the Sex Trafficking of Children and Youth in the United States in January 2019. On September 15, 2020, the Committee released its full report of recommended best practices.
  • Descriptions of what each state has done to implement the recommendations of the Committee. The Committee will provide additional details on how it will collect information from states through a Federal Register Notice in accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act. The data collection process will include self-reporting by each state and a period for public comment. This will be an opportunity to highlight the innovative and successful work in each state.

The Committee has notified Congress (PDF) and state governors and child welfare agencies (PDF) that the report has been released.
