Survivors’ Pathway Promotes Inclusive Care through Pride Celebrations
Survivors’ Pathway , a justice and healing center based in Miami, Florida, provides comprehensive support to individuals who have experienced human trafficking, sexual assault, and other forms of violence. A subrecipient of Kristi’s House under OTIP’s Domestic Victims of Human Trafficking grant program, Survivors’ Pathway recognizes the diversity of their local community, offering trauma-informed mental health counseling inclusive of their LGBTQIA+ clients. They also provide training that equips participants with tools and strategies to address the unique needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. Following a public health approach, Survivors’ Pathway aims to prevent human trafficking and interrelated forms of violence through proactive community engagement and outreach.
Throughout Pride Month, Survivors’ Pathway will participate in multiple events to raise awareness of human trafficking and distribute resources. At their Pride Month Celebration, Survivors’ Pathway will provide STD screenings, HIV/AIDS testing, and PrEP referrals as part of their case management support for individuals who are uninsured and may have contracted HIV or other STDs because of their trafficking experience. Partnering with the City of Miami and the Miami Police Department, Survivors’ Pathway will join other agencies that serve the community to provide information and awareness on human trafficking. To facilitate long-term recovery, Survivors’ Pathway connects clients with these and other agencies, including legal immigration and family law services.
Survivors’ Pathway also provides specialized support for their transgender and gender non-conforming clients by collaborating with local agencies to provide Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Providing gender-affirming care is critical for preventing trafficking among transgender, non-binary, and other gender non-conforming individuals. As part of this support, Survivors’ Pathway will participate in a ceremony where the Consulate of Mexico in Miami will issue gender-affirming birth certificates to transgender Mexican nationals in southern Florida.
