ABSTRACT
Launched as a pilot with private funding in 2009, CareerAdvance was selected in 2010 as one of the original 32 HPOG demonstration projects. Community Action Project of Tulsa County’s (CAP Tulsa’s) program offers training in high-demand healthcare occupations, including Phlebotomy Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assistant, Dental Assistant, Certified Nursing Aide, Certified Medication Aide, Patient Care Technician/Advanced Unlicensed Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, EKG Health Monitor Technician, Central Service Technician, Surgical Technician, Advanced Certified Medication Aide, Medical Coding, Nursing Assistance, and Geriatric Specialty. Supportive services include case management, academic advising, peer support, training-related costs assistance (other than tuition), tutoring, emergency assistance, housing support/assistance, food assistance, childcare assistance, transportation assistance, eye exam/glasses, job search, job placement, and job retention, CPR training, digital literacy, and work readiness training.
Participants in CareerAdvance also have access to common services and benefits, including SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, health clinics, Head Start, childcare subsidies, unemployment insurance, state supplemental payments for disabilities, and utility and rental assistance. Education and training partners include Tulsa Technology Center, Tulsa Community College, and Union Public Schools Adult Learning Center. CAP Tulsa and the Tulsa office of Oklahoma Department of Human Services, the agency responsible for TANF in the state, continue working together to inform TANF recipients about how to apply for the CareerAdvance program. CAP Tulsa and Workforce Tulsa, the Tulsa Area Workforce Development Board, continue to co-enroll HPOG participants eligible for WIOA funding.
