ABSTRACT
San Jacinto College (SJC) operates a Health Career Pathways Partnership (HCPP) Grant to provide education, training, and support services in a variety of healthcare professions to TANF and other low-income individuals over 5 years. SJC is a Hispanic-serving institution with three major campuses in southeast Harris County, Texas. Support comes from the local Workforce Board, vendor colleges, and a variety of healthcare employers. The project will train 1,250 participants in basic skills contextualized with healthcare professions information, various healthcare careers, and workplace readiness; provide support services to help participants reach their educational goals and find jobs; and provide and refine healthcare profession pathways that offer various entrance and exit points for students, stackable credentials that employers value, and both credit and noncredit alternatives to meet participants’ educational goals.
Funded partners include the Neighborhood Centers, Inc., a Houston-based nonprofit that operates 11 Workforce Solutions offices, and Harris Health, the largest healthcare employer in Harris County. The HCPP focuses on the following healthcare occupations: Eye Care Technology, Medical Assistants, Medical Office Clerks, Medical Records and Health Information Technology, Phlebotomists, EKG Technicians, Home Health Aides, Licensed Practical and Vocational Nurses, Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technicians, Pharmacy Technicians, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Radiographic Technicians, Respiratory Therapists, Registered Nurses, Surgical Technicians, Medical Insurance Coder, Medication Aides, Sterile Processing Technicians, Dental Assistants, Community Health Workers, and Emergency Medical Technicians. Supportive services include referrals to local healthcare clinics, emergency food services, and referrals to obtain rent and utility assistance. SJC is working directly with the Houston Galveston Area Council to provide career advisement. Contacts have been made with MD Anderson and Methodist Hospitals to discuss work-based learning with the possibility of transitioning to apprenticeships with the aid of the Department of Labor’s Youth Apprenticeship program. The HPOG Program Director also meets with the SJCDD’s grants office to identify apprenticeship collaboration opportunities.
*This second round of grant awards has been extended an additional 12 months, ending September 29, 2021.
