ABSTRACT
Turtle Mountain Community College (TMCC) operates the Health Education Access through Rural Training Project (referred to as the HEART Project). TMCC takes career preparation in the region to a new level by incorporating defined career ladders that include expanded training opportunities in employer-demanded, labor market—informed, high-wage healthcare careers. Occupations for which participants are trained include: Medical Lab Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse, Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medication Aide II, Patient Access Specialist, Medical Administrative Assistant, Health and Fitness Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, and Pharmacy Technician. Supportive services available to participants include preemployment training, postemployment transitional support, computers, transportation, meals, childcare assistance, textbooks, supplies, medical clothing and shoes, and academic and emergency support.
Stackable credentials allow multiple entry and exit points within each track that are aligned with available jobs. A bridge program ensures participants are college ready. Through videoconferencing technology and online platforms, the HEART Project expands reach and access to training opportunities; provides new opportunities for participants to access work-based learning; and delivers innovative, customized support services.
Relationships continued to be leveraged with partners, including: Rolette County Social Service, The Turtle Mountain Employment and Training Program, Job Service North Dakota, Tribal NEXT Program, and Turtle Mountain Vocational Rehabilitation. TMCC’s HEART Project has positioned itself within Workforce Projects/Programs and the Office of Apprenticeship as a key partner with the ability to elevate and promote workforce development through quality training and education combined with goal-oriented action plans designed to put project participants into jobs which are in-demand in the State of North Dakota.
*This second round of grant awards has been extended an additional 12 months, ending September 29, 2021.
