ABSTRACT
Volunteers of America—Michigan’s (VOAMI’s) HPOG program provides opportunities for TANF recipients and those who have timed out of TANF (within 24 months) in Detroit—Wayne County to obtain education, vocational training, and living wage employment in the healthcare industry, particularly in occupations that have experienced labor shortages and are expected to be in high demand. The program includes a client-centered case management model that connects participants with education, training, and supportive services, and an occupational peer mentoring program that facilitates continued participant contact with staff after being placed with an employer.
Occupational training focuses on the following positions: Certified Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Technician, Home Health Aide, Phlebotomy Technician, Practical Nurse, Medical Biller and Coder, Medical Records and Health Information Technologist, Registered Nurse, Dental Assistant, Dental Hygienist, Surgical Technician, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Assistant, EKG Technician, Dialysis Technician, Community Health Worker, and Psychiatry Aide (Registered Behavior Technician). VOAMI provides supportive services, including vehicle repairs, transportation assistance, emergency assistance, emergency housing assistance, dependent care, training supplies/uniforms, pretraining and preemployment medical screenings, and background checks. VOAMI will pay for final test or licensure exams for relevant courses/trainings completed by the participants during their HPOG participation. VOAMI will pay for up to one retake examination as well, pending the participant’s completion of a review session or course and the employment specialist’s assessment that the participant is ready. Payment for additional tests/license exams/renewals of certifications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
*This second round of grant awards has been extended an additional 12 months, ending September 29, 2021.
