Human Services Research Partnerships: Puerto Rico

2013-2016

The Research Partnerships are intended to improve understanding of the most promising human services approaches to improve the quality of life in the region, with particular focus on topics related to the Head Start and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families programs. The first Human Service Research Partnership cooperative agreement was awarded to the Inter American University of Puerto Rico Metropolitan Campus (IAUPR) to support partnerships among researchers, local governments, and community-based organizations to define and address research questions regarding the social and economic well-being of low-income children and families.

The team at Inter-American University identified their main goal as promotion of effective research and the development of a culture and practice of evidence-based policy making on low-income families and children in Puerto Rico. Under the leadership of the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico Metropolitan Campus (IAUPR-MC) (Carmen Nazario, Principal Investigator; Dr. Hector Cordero-Guzman, Co-Principal Investigator) the project brought together key stakeholders from academia, government agencies, non-profit organizations and providers, philanthropic institutions and the private sector to develop a multi-stakeholder partnership to advance research, focusing on low-income families and children. The project resulted in multiple literature reviews, statistical analyses of poverty in Puerto Rico, small research projects and a conference.
